HOBSONS Bay Council has thrown its support behind Wyndham Council’s calls to duplicate Point Cook Road.
But VicRoads has no plans to duplicate the arterial despite the RACV ranking it among the state’s most congested.
The RACV wants the state government to allocate funding in this year’s budget to duplicate Point Cook, Dunnings and Palmers roads.
It says duplicating sections would create a Seabrook bypass, easing Point Cook Road traffic which carries more than 25,000 vehicles a day.
Hobsons Bay mayor Angela Altair said the duplications were a dire necessity. “Council strongly supports Wyndham’s endeavours to have the sections of Forsyth, Sayers, Point Cook, Heaths, Palmers, Derrimut, Leakes and Dohertys roads upgraded.”
But VicRoads regional director Patricia Liew said there were no current plans to duplicate Point Cook Road.
She said the 2008 Palmers Road extension from Dunnings Road to the Princes Freeway had reduced pressure on Point Cook Road.
“Completion of the Palmers Road overpass will provide an additional key access point to the north, and Williams Landing station will provide an alternative to the Aircraft and Laverton stations currently accessed via Point Cook Road.”
Ms Liew said VicRoads was investigating the need to improve other roads around Wyndham but would not say which were being considered.
