Cultural Diversity Week: Tastes and sights highlight Maribyrnong melting pot

MARIBYRNONG’S vibrant diversity will erupt in a whirlwind of colour with a host of activities for Cultural Diversity Week (March 16-24).

A Stand Up For Diversity comedy show kicks off events at Phoenix Youth Centre next Monday. MC’d by Aamer Rahman, of Fear of a Brown Planet, it will feature a range of comedians from multicultural backgrounds.

Brimbank Maribyrnong Interfaith Network hosts a Places of Worship Bus Tour on March 20, and a Close The Gap Day community barbecue at Braybrook Community Centre on March 21 will celebrate indigenous culture with traditional food tastings and a weaving circle.

On Saturday, March 23, the 10th annual Multicultural Day event will return to Footscray library, featuring a celebration of international music, dance and food tasting.

West Footscray library will be awash with colour at the Holi Festival, showcasing the sights, sounds and tastes of Indian culture.

The week of celebration rounds out with a Harmony Feast at Maidstone Community Centre on March 24, featuring cultural activities and mouth-watering delicacies from around the globe.

Mayor Catherine Cumming says Cultural Diversity Week is a chance to join together and celebrate one of the most multicultural communities in Victoria.

“Cultural Diversity Week lets us celebrate the wonderful diversity of our community, and I encourage everyone in the community to come along to one or more of the great events on offer.”
