Netball

City West Falcons will hit the court tonight for the start of their Victorian Netball League championship division premiership defence. The Marg Lind-coached Falcons will face North East Blaze at the State Netball and Hockey Centre at 7pm. The VU-Western Lightning, guided to the grand final by Matt Hills last season, go to Bendigo on Saturday night to meet the UB Ballarat Pride.

Shooting

Western suburbs shooter Adam Vella was on target in the men’s trap shotgun at the Australia Cup in Adelaide at the weekend. Vella, a two-time Olympian, was a standout in the qualifying rounds and finished with a total score of 119. He won the gold medal match against Frank Minici by five targets. Vella also returned home with a silver medal in the double trap.

Soccer

Altona North will avoid the first round of the Football Federation Victoria state Knockout Cup. The Robert Casha-coached North was granted a bye and moved directly into the second round where it will meet Hoppers Crossing on the road at Grange Reserve on March 9. Altona Magic is one of 16 seeded teams and will not play in the competition until the fourth round.
