Veteran cyclist takes care of No.1

FOOTSCRAY Cycling Club veteran Adam Murchie will get to wear the No.1 jersey for the next year after taking out the action-packed Eric Turner Memorial criterium championships.

A who’s who of cycling heavyweights turned up to race, with Dom Dudkiewicz, Graham Carlson, Ben Johnson, Murchie, Nathan Page and Ben O’Leary headlining the starting list.

Murchie, 35, who joined the club as an 18-year old, almost missed the break when Page attacked early in the race. “The first 10 minutes were full-on,” he said. “I had just done a turn on the front when Nathan attacked. I knew I had to go.”

Murchie used his guile and experience to choose his tactics at the end.

“I got the jump on the others and made sure I was first wheel into the last corner. I’ve been working on my sprint and it paid off.”

Murchie crossed ahead, just clear of Page.
