Re: In pecking order, Footscray chooks ‘not sustainable’ as council orders removal (Weekly, January 23)

Nice work on the doublespeak, Maribyrnong Council. We desperately need a council that supports and enables our communities instead of the autobot ‘no’ response that so easily rolls off its tongue.

As a chicken owner, I have had pleasant dealings with the animal control officers, but only because they didn’t feel it necessary to follow the letter of the law in our situation. It is clear these bylaws have no connection to reality and need an urgent review with significant input from chicken owners.

So one, maybe two, sour, bitter, pathetic individuals complain and that carries more weight than the community which makes up this street? Something wrong with this nanny state. And such a typical response from Maribyrnong Council, which, in my experience, is a big fan of Yes Minister.

Utterly ridiculous behaviour on the council’s behalf, particularly with its push on sustainability. It needs to get a grip and congratulate these people for taking up their push and sharing the chickens with others. Wake up, council.
