THERE was a distinct Altona flavour within Victoria’s women’s and men’s teams who enjoyed one of their most successful Australian Hockey League campaigns.
Danielle Schubach and Greg Drake were front and centre as the VIS Vipers claimed the national women’s title with a 5-1 blitz of NSW Arrows in the final at the weekend.
Schubach was captain of the first Vipers team to become champions since 2003, while Drake offered his expertise as assistant coach of that team.
The Victorian Vikings came third in the men’s section, bringing home a bronze medal. The Altona connection was former state league 1 captain Matthew Guest.
Altona chairman David Burns lauded the success of his players on the national stage. “We’re extremely proud of Danielle, Greg and Matthew.”
