A YARRAVILLE costume designer has taken the concept of people wearing their emotions on their sleeve to a whole new level.
Casey-Scott Corless has spent a “manic couple of weeks” designing costumes for Love Letters , a new play based on real-life love letters submitted by the public.
Corless says the project has been flooded with letters, some recent and others stretching back many years.
“It has been wonderful, an incredibly imaginative and collaborative process,” he said.
The design work follows a number of stage and film projects for Corless, including shows with Red Room Theatre and La Mama Theatre as well as music videos for acts such as Evermore and Something For Kate.
The latest brief, to create costumes based on the love letters exchanged by lovebirds Australia-wide, was an unusual one.
“We had a rough idea for what we wanted in the show but the material emerged and the costumes emerged alongside the letters.”
Corless has been aiming to create a vibrant response to the heartfelt emotions included in the letters.
Love Letters is written by Kylie Trounson in collaboration with St Martins’ Teen Ensemble and directed by Sarah Austin, who says she’s excited to be working with a passionate cast of 11 teenage artists.
Love Letters is at the Fairfax Studio, Arts Centre, Melbourne, 7.30pm today to Saturday. There are also 11am shows tomorrow and Friday. Further details: artscentremelbourne.com.au
