Mastering self, destiny

As principal of Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School since 2004, I am very aware of the rich history of our school and its motto Potens Sui.

The motto means ‘mastery of self and one’s destiny’, a saying which our school firmly embraces as its core value, one that shapes everything that happens here.

This includes its extensive co-curricular program, student-generated celebrations such as multicultural week, health week, women’s leadership programs and the varied house competitions and activities.

It is a welcoming and inclusive environment where students collaborate and help each other to be their best in everything they do.

Each year, many of our graduates are offered valuable scholarships and exciting opportunities.

Mac.Robertson Girls’ is the only selective, government, girls’ school in Victoria and one of seven government girls’ schools.

It has been the highest-performing school in the VCE in all but one of the past 10 years.

Students combine a strong work ethic with high expectations of themselves, being assisted by great teachers who personalise learning for each individual and offer exceptional learning experiences.

The school was established in 1905 as the first state secondary school, The Continuation School, which became Melbourne High School in 1912. It was co-educational until 1927 when the boys moved to Forest Hill. In 1934, Sir Macpherson Robertson endowed the school with a new home in Kings Way, Melbourne, where it remains — with new buildings added in 2000.
