A FIELD of 29 candidates will vie for seats on Maribyrnong Council at the October 27 election.
By the close of nominations yesterday, six of Maribyrnong’s seven incumbent councillors had put their hat into the ring alongside other hopefuls keen to put their stamp on local government.
Of the current council, only Cr Dina Lynch is stepping down, after seven years in the role.
“I started out on council as a community advocate and I don’t think that will change,” Cr Lynch said. “I will still be out there advocating, fighting on issues.”
This will be the first election under a new ward structure in which seven seats are up for grabs across three wards.
River, Stoney Creek and Yarraville wards replace the current seven-ward system.
River ward includes Maribyrnong, part of Maidstone and part of Footscray.
Stony Creek ward includes Braybrook, Tottenham, West Footscray and part of Maidstone.
Yarraville ward has Yarraville, Kingsville, Seddon and part of Footscray.
Councillors John Cumming, Michael Clarke and Martin Zakharov are seeking re-election in the Yarraville ward, councillors Sel Sanli and Catherine Cumming in Stony Creek ward, and Cr Sarah Carter in River ward.
This year the council is conducting a postal election.
Enrolled voters will have ballot packs mailed to them between October 9 and 11.
