Healthy food at  Maribyrnong program’s heart

HEALTH experts are working with community leaders and teachers to spread the healthy living message across Maribyrnong.

Maribyrnong Council and SpiritWest have joined forces with Western Region Health Centre (WRHC) in running a Bilingual Health Educators Program.

The program, co-ordinated by WRHC, is based on a peer education model.

Its aim is to give practical sessions and discussions to newly arrived communities and older migrants at risk of chronic disease.

Bilingual teachers from different cultural backgrounds have been trained to deliver the program and share knowledge and skills with their family, friends and the broader community.

Mayor John Cumming said the program was part of the two-year, federal government-funded Incredible, Edible, Moveable Maribyrnong initiative.

The initiative includes a range of free or low-cost activities that encourage healthy eating and physical activity.

It is supported by a $700,000 federal grant and offers programs such as free gym membership, women’s soccer, a community garden and fitness sessions for seniors.

The Maribyrnong project is one of seven in the state to receive funding due to high overweight and obesity rates and significant social and economic disadvantage in the area.
