Write place for fantastical read in Footscray art centre gardens

Inspired by tales including The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, a Fantastical Reading Chair has taken pride of place in the Footscray Community Art Centre gardens.

The public art piece was launched during Maribyrnong Library Service’s closing Literary Festival event, dubbed the Myths Woven by Us. Maribyrnong Council commissioned the chair to signify the importance of reading and literature and celebrate the National Year of Reading. It was designed and built by local sculptor Jos Van Hulsen (pictured with the chair), using recycled industrial materials such as railway pins and spikes to reflect the area’s industrial history.

“The chair was designed to entice people to sit and read and be swept away, to immerse themselves in someone else’s story,” he said. The Footscray Community Arts Centre is at 45 Moreland Road.
