West Yarraville streets get green light for 300 new trees

WEST Yarraville streets are a little greener thanks to a Brooklyn business which funded the planting of 300 trees.

Cargill Australia, operator of a vegetable oil processing plant that has attracted complaints and Environment Protection Authority attention over odour issues, paid for the $50,000 planting project.

Cargill entered into an enforceable undertaking with the EPA in April last year.

This was in order to avoid court action over odour incidents in May and August, 2010.

The agreement included providing $50,000 to the West Yarraville On the Nose Community Group through the EPA’s ‘inspiring environmental solutions program’.

New trees were planted in 12 Yarraville streets bounded by Footscray Cemetery, Francis and Roberts streets and Geelong Road.

Cargill is spending about $600,000 on improved odour control through steps including regular auditing and equipment upgrades.
