WILLIAMSTOWN reasserted its dominance of the Lacrosse Victoria men’s state league with a 26-9 drubbing of MCC at Fearon Reserve on Saturday.
The Fearons had been down on form with a pair of losses in the past month after starting the season with 12 straight wins.
They were eager to send a message with finals just two weeks away and took out frustrations on the hapless MCC with a quick kill.
The Fearons were flawless in the first quarter with 10 unanswered goals, four from the stick of Darren Nicholas. They had put the game out of reach of MCC at half-time with a 17-1 lead.
To their credit, MCC never waved the white flag, managing to steal a quarter from the ladder-leading Fearons.
There were plenty of goals to go around for the Fearons with Daniel Jennings (7), Nicholas (5), Kyle Morland, Aaron Lawman (4 each) and Matthew Price (2) all getting in on the act with multiples.
The Fearons will host Camberwell in the last round before the finals on Saturday.
Footscray is finals-bound after a 20-5 mauling of Caulfield on their travels to Caulfield Park.
The Scray had a strong start to open up a four-goal gap at the first break and never looked back.
Luke Moore found the back of the net in each quarter to finish with five goals for the Scray, while Kane Mollison and James Lawerson scored four apiece.
Altona was competitive with Eltham for large periods before losing 14-6 at Lower Eltham Park.
Lachlan McKinnon had a big game for the A’s with two goals and two assists. Chayden Allen also fired in a double.
A’s coach and life member Ric Benedierks will take charge of his final game on Saturday at home to Camberwell. It brings down the curtain on his decorated 40-year involvement in the sport as player and coach, which included coaching the Australian team.
Meanwhile, Footscray has set up a grand final with powerhouse Newport in the women’s state league after crushing Williamstown 12-2 in the preliminary at Surrey Park on Saturday. Sarah Mollison, with three goals and five assists, and Abbie Burgess, four goals, were the Scray’s most dynamic.-Lance Jenkinson
