Altona’s onfield class fails to bring the points

ALTONA had the lion’s share of possession and more shots, but it counted for nought on the scoreboard.

A clinical MCC made the most of limited chances to win 3-1 in the Hockey Victoria women’s state league 1 at the MHS-MCC Hockey Facility in South Yarra last Saturday.

The A’s had the look of team eager to complete the double over MCC after a win in round seven, and they held the early momentum with ball movement that was pleasing to the eye.

Their dominance was thanks largely to a master class from homegrown star Danielle Schubach, who controlled the tempo of the game on her stick.

Import Kate Gillis, a Canadian international, was just as impressive in her last game for the club.

For all the A’s’ control in general play, they had little to show for it where it counted most.

“We are working very hard trying to play in a certain way,” said A’s coach Marc Richardson.

“When that doesn’t translate into a positive result it’s obviously disappointing .

“We had plenty of chances to score and will keep working on that aspect of our game.”

The A’s did eventually find a way to goal through Tegan Purser, but the horse had already bolted.

They will play their last home game of the year on Saturday against Doncaster.

Footscray remains in the hunt for a finals berth after a 3-1 victory over Camberwell at McIvor Reserve.

Amy Turnbull fired in a double for the Bulldogs to take her season tally to nine, with a third goal scored by Emma Robinson.

The Bulldogs will host a penultimate round blockbuster against Essendon on Saturday with fourth spot up for grabs.

In men’s state league 1, Footscray was beaten mercilessly 10-1 by Camberwell, while Altona had a 1-1 draw with MCC after a Chris Coleman goal.
