Jarry shines on Olympic stage as Opals bring back bronze

ALTONA Gators-grown forward Rachel Jarry scored eight points and grabbed three rebounds in the Australian Opals’ successful bronze medal playoff against Russia at the London Games last Saturday.

The Opals won 83-74 on the back of starring roles from forward Lauren Jackson (25 points) and retiring point guard Kristi Harrower (21).

It was the Opals’ fifth consecutive medal at the Olympic tournament.

Jarry, 20, averaged 4.2 points, 2.8 rebounds and 0.9 assists over the tournament.

The Bulleen Boomers star’s best game was in the semi-final loss to a powerhouse USA, which hasn’t been beaten since Barcelona in 1992.

Jarry played with a real vigour to finish with five points, six rebounds and five assists.

While the Opals did their utmost, they fell short to the eventual gold medal winner by 13 points.

Meanwhile, Seddon-trained wrestler Farzad Tarash had a blink-and-you-miss-it Olympics campaign.

Australia’s only wrestling competitor was

beaten 3-0 5-0 in just four minutes by North Korea’s Jong Myong Ri in the 60-kilogram freestyle event.

Tarash told reporters after the bout that it was a “dream come true” to represent Australia at the Olympics and that the top-level experience would be invaluable for the rest of his career.
