Move helps Footscray playgroup close generation gap

IT’S on for young and old in Footscray as some of the area’s newest arrivals share time with some of the most senior.

Baptcare Westhaven Community Aged Care has opened its doors to host a playgroup that used to meet in the hall across the road.

The move has provided a more inviting meeting place and given the youngsters a chance to connect with the area’s older residents.

Playgroup co-ordinator Cathie Staunton says the initial idea was for the children’s parents to spend time with residents unable to get out and about.

“The reality is we receive just as much care from the residents who greet us joyfully, draw us beautiful pictures, knit toys and share their experiences with us over a cuppa,” Ms Staunton said. “It’s such a lovely way to spend a Monday morning!”

Val Meadows, 84, says the playgroup is fantastic as it takes her back to when her children were little.

“Little Ruby was two last week and when I wished her a happy birthday you should have seen the smile beaming on her face,” Mrs Meadows said. Three other residents have joined Val in visiting the playgroup. They’re Jean, Hilda and Andrew, who “talks the leg off an iron pot”. About 40,000 children attend playgroup across Victoria each week.
