Homeless funding extended
Women’s Health West has welcomed the federal government’s extension of homelessness funding for two more years. The Footscray-based service uses National Partnership Against Homelessness (NPAH) funds to provide a 24/7 crisis response capacity that last financial year received 6209 police referrals, completed 187 security upgrades and provided court support to 62 women in obtaining intervention orders.
Bunnings jobs for West Footscray
More than 160 new jobs will be created when West Footscray’s $49 million Bunnings Warehouse opens its doors in May. Warehouse manager Ross Cutler said 160 new workers would join more than 20 existing team members transferring from other stores to the new store at 240-246 Geelong Road, West Footscray.
Indie gong for Yarraville writer
Yarraville author Maxine Beneba Clarke has picked up another award for her short story collection, Foreign Soil. Clarke was last week announced the ‘Indie Book of the Year debut fiction’ winner in the Australian Independent Bookseller awards.
Williamstown garage in flames
Firefighters were called to Nancy Street, Williamstown, last Thursday morning after a residential garage caught fire. Crews worked to stop the fire spreading into the roof space of a neighbouring property. A man was treated at the scene.
