WHEN former flight attendant Karen Fitzpatrick decided she wanted a career that was a little more grounded, she was daunted by what seemed like endless options.
Much had changed in the 17 years since she had left school and getting straight answers was difficult.
She then discovered The Learning Store @ Highpoint, part of Victoria University’s community gateways initiative.
The program has helped more than 1500 people with career education and counselling, putting them on the right path for their future careers.
Ms Fitzpatrick shared her story at the official launch of The Learning Store @ Highpoint last week, explaining how it had helped her work out the next step in her return to study.
“I contacted The Learning Store quite early on in my decision-making process and they assisted me with deciphering the VTAC guide, suitability of courses and also my eligibility and options of pathways if I was unsuccessful in entering a degree straight away.”
Torn between teaching and social work, Ms Fitzpatrick began studying a part-time bachelor of arts course earlier this year.
“My first semester helped clarify my decision to transfer across to the bachelor of social work.”
Retailers and staff are also making the most of The Learning Store, undertaking a program that helps convert the skills they’ve learned into a diploma, certificate or even degree.
