THE longest night of the year will seem even longer than usual to Elizabeth Drozd.
The chief executive of Maidstone-based Australian Multicultural Community Services (AMCS) will give up her bed for the night, sleeping rough at Etihad Stadium tomorrow night for The Vinnies CEO Sleepout.
“I think it’s an effective way to raise attention to the issue of homelessness,” she says.
Ms Drozd is hoping it won’t be too cold for her first time in the sleepout.
But even with overnight temperatures dipping into chilly territory, she couldn’t pass up the chance to take part.
“I have a strong social justice background and have spent the past 20 years supporting those experiencing hardship.”
AMCS, a not-for-profit and charitable organisation, regularly deals with clients without a home to go to.
Ms Drozd said people would be surprised to know just how many people ended up without a roof and sleeping in their car.
More than 105,000 men, women and children sleep out across Australia each night, according to Vinnies.
Ms Drozd said those fortunate to have established good professional lives had a responsibility, and now an opportunity, to raise awareness of those who experienced homelessness in Australia.
