THE Altona Gators have cemented their spot in the top two in the Victorian Basketball League’s Big V division 1.
After splitting their games last week, the Gators were too strong with a 58-43 win against Keilor on Sunday.
The Thunder started the better of the sides as they came out attacking the scoreboard, putting up six more scoring shots than the Gators. They continued to put up shots in the second term, but inaccuracy cost them. The Thunder hit only two shots from the field.
Like all good teams, the Gators made them pay, outscoring them 15-7 points to take a four-point lead into half-time.
The Thunder’s inability to make their shots again cost them, as the Gators increased the lead to 13 even though they had the same number of shots.
Adding to the Thunder’s pain was the Gators’ pressure under the basket where they took 19 rebounds for the quarter.
In the final term, both teams wasted shots, but the game was already over by then.
Nicole McMahon in her first season with the club continued her good form, top-scoring with 17 points and taking 13 rebounds.
It was her fifth double-double for the season. Emma Coyne chipped in with 11 points.
The men’s division1 side had a bye.
Next game for both teams is against Geelong on June 17.
