Dinjerra primary’s symphonic lessons

THE magic of music was revealed for Braybrook’s Dinjerra Primary School pupils last week.

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra string stars Simon Collins and Steve Reeves treated grade 3 and 4 students to a special sneak preview of what they will perform at the Melbourne Town Hall this week.

By visiting schools ahead of the performance, the musicians give pupils an insight

into the music and offer up a familiar face

on stage.

MSO education manager Bronwyn Lobb says it will be the first time many of the students have seen an orchestra perform live.

“It’s about breaking down barriers. We see it as a way of deepening the experience for the students; it enables them to connect with the performance,” Ms Lobb said.

The pupils are among 1600 selected by the Education Department to have their visit sponsored by MSO patrons.

Ms Lobb says the MSO Education Week program, now in its second year, provides a great buzz for everyone.

“The feedback from the teachers involved last year was overwhelmingly positive. This opens a door for children who may not have the opportunity to experience an orchestra any other way.”

Concerts this week range from Classic Kids with Playschool’s Jay Laga’aia to Ears Wide Open with music educator Richard Gill.

As part of a ‘Meet the Orchestra’ segment, Paul Rissmann – the “Jamie Oliver of music education” – will guide pupils through works around a ‘heroes and rogues’ theme.

Education Week concerts are being held at Melbourne Town Hall until Saturday. Details: mso.com.au or 99299600.
