ALTONA Gators spoilt their perfect record in the Victorian Basketball League Big V women’s division 1 with a 70-62 loss to Warrnambool Mermaids away at the Warrnambool Stadium on Saturday night.
The Gators travelled to the scene of their 2010 championship planning to capture a ninth successive win for the season.
They ran on empty in the last quarter despite leading by three points at the third-quarter break.
It was all rosy for the Gators until midway through the term when Mermaids Holly Greene, Carly Pulling and Kate Sewell started to make their shots down the stretch.
All is not lost for the Gators, who enjoy a buffer at the top of the ladder, and remain the team to beat despite the hiccup.
Star player Brigitte Ardossi is still in hot form after a night when she scored 29 points and reeled in eight boards.
The Gators will be busy this weekend.
They have a double header with a game against Whittlesea on the road on Saturday night, and against Southern Peninsula at the Altona Sports Centre on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Altona Gators were out of their depth in a 79-56 loss to the Warrnambool Seahawks in the Big V men’s division 1.
