LOCAL artists are being coaxed out of the studio and into the public arena to produce temporary public artworks in Footscray.
The project is a collaboration with New York artist, arts administrator and curator Kendal Henry.
Henry (pictured) is looking for artists interested in collaborating to create innovative, provocative and exciting public art pieces to celebrate the diversity and vibrancy of Footscray.
It begins with a discussion about how public art can address and impact some of the issues at its site and how public art can be used as a tool for social engagement and economic development.
On a visit to Footscray last year as part of Maribyrnong Council’s Arts Chat series, Henry said a vibrant arts community could contribute to the character and appeal of a neighbourhood, while public art could help break down negative perceptions about an area.
“People have a misconception that art is a luxury, but when people see public art anywhere it sends a different kind of message: that people care about that area,” he said at the time.
Work can be visual, literary or performance based, but must involve collaboration and engage with the community. Works will be temporary and site specific.
Henry will work with local artists this month and will continue later in the year during another visit to the country.
