Library to reveal a capital, grand vision

AS Australians celebrate the centenary of our capital, a historic exhibition showcasing Canberra’s winning design is on display at Williamstown library. Joan Ridley (pictured), past president of the Williamstown Historical Society, was at Friday’s launch of Grand Visions – Centenary of the Plan. Federal Gellibrand MP Nicola Roxon said the exhibition celebrated the work of Walter Burley Griffin and his wife Marion. “On May 23, 1912, ‘King’ O’Malley, Minister for Home Affairs in the Fisher Labor government, announced Walter Burley Griffin as the winner of the competition to design our national capital,” she said. “The design was a partnership between Mr Griffin and his wife, Marion Mahony Griffin, whose exquisite renderings are works of art that earn their place as heritage treasures in our national archives.” The travelling exhibition runs until May 19. Canberra historian David Headon will speak about the competition to design our national capital at Williamstown library on April 10 from 6.15pm.
