Smoke on water not such a gem for Williamstown ferry

FIREFIGHTERS last Friday saved a passenger ferry from sinking after it started filling with water at Gem Pier off Williamstown.

The 15-metre Southern Spirit, which can carry up to 100 passengers, began to sink just before 6am.

Twenty-three firefighters pumped water from the vessel for about 45 minutes to save it from going under.

West Melbourne marine officers (pictured) later checked over the 15-metre catamaran to ensure it was safe. — Picture: Michael Copp
