A MAN wielding a tomahawk and knife was arrested at Coles Liquorland in Altona this afternoon.
The Pier Street store was temporarily closed after police used capsicum foam to subdue the man, who has been arrested under the Mental Health Act.
Sergeant Rebecca Marshall, of Altona North police, said the man, who was with his partner, was first seen waving around a tomahawk and knife in Logan Reserve at about 12.30pm.
‘‘He was walking around the streets and ended up going inside Coles Liquorland.”
Sergeant Marshall said police evacuated Coles, used the capsicum foam and arrested the man.
‘‘The community was really good. They gave us a lot of information which helped lead to where we could find him.
‘‘At one point we were trying to cordon the area, but all the community obviously knew where he was so they helped us.’’
It is understood that no other
customers were inside the Liquorland at the time.
Staff could not comment but were
reportedly “fine” after the incident.
The Altona man, in his late 40s, is expected to be charged with weapons offences.
