CANDIDATES in the Hobsons Bay Council election are calling for disclosure of donations in line with Victoria’s local-government legislation and greater transparency of how campaigns are funded.
Strand ward candidate Susan Miller, speaking for three Hobsons Bay Greens candidates, said there should be more disclosure.
“One of the key principles of the Greens is transparency in government at all levels, so we would support disclosure of campaign donations,” she said. “Our total campaign expenditure has been $1420 for three wards.
“Funds came from branch fund-raisers with local volunteers arranging local community functions. The rest came from state office funds of party membership fees and individual donations.
“No funds were donated by vested interest groups. Our nomination fees of $250 each were paid by the state office and will be paid back when/if we receive them back from the VEC.”
Cherry Lake independent candidate Sandra Wilson said her campaign was totally self-funded and that there should be more transparency.
“I estimate the cost [of my campaign] to be in the vicinity of $3000, most of it being for design and printing of flyers. Currently, candidates only have to submit a disclosure of donations of $500 or more 40 days after the close of election. It’s off the radar by then. Clear the air and get as much out in the open as possible, sooner rather than later. I think it’s directly related to the choice of candidate people want to elect.”
