AN Altona biscuit maker has told its 105 staff this afternoon that their plant will shut, and their jobs will go — with 80 per cent of manufacturing now done in Melbourne to be sent to Malaysia.
Some jobs are likely to be absorbed by Kerry Ingredients’ New South Wales and Queensland factories.
National Union of Workers state secretary Tim Kennedy said Premier Ted Baillieu should be doing more to protect Victoria’s manufacturing industry and TAFE training courses.
“Does the Victorian government have a plan for fostering good Victorian jobs now and into the future?” he asked.
Kerry Ingredients this afternoon confirmed the Altona plant’s closure, and a spokeswoman said the company would soon provide a statement giving details of the job losses.
The state government has been contacted for comment.
