Trunk call for Newport Lakes primary as ‘Mali’ drops in

It’s not every day an elephant turns up in class. A sculpture of Mali the Asian elephant calf visited Newport Lakes Primary School last week as part of Melbourne Zoo’s 150th birthday celebrations.

Prep pupils Miles and Lola (pictured) trumpeted the new arrival. Miles’ father, sculptor Robert Hague, spent a week painting Mali at his Newport studio.

It will be exhibited on Melbourne streets before being auctioned in October.
