WRFL: Eagles leave Hawks without a feather to fly

YARRAVILLE-SEDDON has emerged nigh on untouchable in the first five rounds of the Western Region Football League division 2 season.

The Eagles tore apart injury-hit Glenorden Hawks by 103 points at the Yarraville Oval on Saturday and are beginning to appear a genuine threat in an open second-tier flag race.

David Connell’s team was efficient in the first half, taking a 37-point lead into half-time, and was brutal after the main break as it reeled off 15 of the last 20 goals of the game.

Beau Guest starred in a best-on-ground display for the Eagles, while Adam Baker was a reliable avenue to goal with six majors.

The Eagles will square off with a refreshed West Footscray Roosters at Shorten Reserve on Saturday.

The second-placed Roosters have not played a game since Anzac Day.

Laverton Magpies are in a world of pain after the most embarrassing performance in their club’s history.

The Magpies managed just a solitary behind in a 258-point loss to Coburg Districts at Cole Reserve.

Their final score was 0.1 (1) – not the kind of result you would expect from a club that made inroads on the top sides last season and has been open about its desire to knock on the door of the finals this season.

It was a weekend of wide margins in the WRFL’s second division.

Wyndhamvale carved up Braybrook and Caroline Springs dumped North Sunshine.

Parkside had a strong 41-point win over last year’s runners up Albanvale in one of the more significant results of the round.

Imposing target Fab Mastropasqua lit up Henry Turner Reserve with six goals for the winners.

In division 1, Altona got the job done in a potential banana-peel game over St Albans by 72 points.

Mitch Turnbull continued his stellar season for the Vikings with three goals in a best-afield display, while defender Nathan Leslie, onballer Reece Miles and ruckman Riak Riak, in his first game back from injury, were the other standouts.

Spotswood star Jason Cloke booted five goals in a 53-point win over Port Melbourne Colts on the road at JL Murphy Reserve.

Deer Park, Sunshine and Hoppers Crossing were the other top-flight winners at the weekend.
