Feared Fearons dominate lacrosse derby

WILLIAMSTOWN blasted neighbours Altona to smithereens in a one-sided Lacrosse Victoria men’s state league1 local derby.

The fearsome Fearons had 10 individual goalscorers as they racked up a 24-1 win on the road at PJ Lynch Reserve on Saturday.

Fearons president Robert Speakman told the Weekly that co-coaches Jai Carroll and Scott Garnsworthy received an across-the-board contribution from their team.

“I wouldn’t say anybody really stood out,” he said.

“It was pretty well spread around.”

The sides traded goals in the opening minutes before the Fearons reeled off a remarkable 23 unanswered.

Seven players had multiple goal outings and there were five scoring hat-tricks, by Matthew Garnsworthy, Ben Newman, Ashley Wilkinson, Daniel Jennings and Darren Nicholas.

Garnsworthy was the talk of the clubrooms following his immense five-goal performance from the midfield.

“It was just his second game back after a year and a half away from the game and he stood out,” Speakman said.

The Fearons have made an impressive start to season 2012.

They exacted revenge on Surrey Park in the opening round grand final rematch and played scintillating lacrosse to beat Altona.

The goal for the Fearons is clearly to go one step better than last year’s runners-up

finish.

“We had a very good preseason and we got some players back who we didn’t have last year,” Speakman said.

“Our senior list is certainly stronger than it was [last year].

“There’s a long way to go, but I reckon we’ll give it a fair shake this year. We’ve had two fairly impressive wins.”

The Fearons have also welcomed US import Brendan Mascuch into the line-up.

Mascuch has lived in Australia for the past few years and wanted to get back into the sport.

The defender has proven more than capable as a bonus regular starter.

The undefeated Fearons face another stern test in the third round against Footscray, who ran riot to beat Surrey Park 24-8 after Daniel Stiglich (seven goals), Luke Moore (six), Jack Mooney (five) and Chris Plumb (four) found their range in front of goal.

Speakman is urging the local community to come out in force for what will be a smorgasbord of lacrosse at Fearon Reserve on Saturday.

“All of our games, except one, will be down at the Fearon,” he said.

“The more spectators we get, the happier we’ll be.”
