VEC recommends Hobsons Bay ward re-shuffle

HOBSONS Bay should be divided into three wards represented by seven councillors according to a Victorian Electoral Commission report released today.

The VEC is recommending one three-councillor ward and two two-councillor wards, and that ward names be changed to Wetlands Ward, Cherry Lake Ward and Strand Ward.

Hobsons Bay currently has seven single-councillor wards.

Electoral Commissioner Steve Tully said a wide variety of views had been put forward during the review.

‘‘All information, including submissions, was carefully considered by the panel of staff and local government experts to reach this recommended electoral structure.’’

He said the VEC had also considered the municipality’s demographics and growth potential and the electoral structure of similar municipalities before making its recommendation.

Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell will consider the report, and if endorsed, the changes will be put in place for October’s council election.
