Hobsons Bay Council backs marriage equality

HOBSONS Bay Council has made a submission supporting marriage equality to a House of Representatives committee inquiry into two bills.

Cr Tony Briffa, who is the world’s first openly intersex mayor, said it was right for the council to show its support for marriage equality, irrespective of sex, gender identity or any other attribute.

“The campaign for marriage equality is important because we believe the current marriage laws systematically discriminate against a particular class of people in our society,” Cr Briffa said.

“The Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities recognises everyone is entitled to equal and effective protection against discrimination. I know couples who have been in loving, committed relationships for decades but are not allowed to marry just because they are both the same sex. This is unjust.”
