I cycle to work daily from Brooklyn into the Melbourne CBD. My commute includes ‘the gauntlet’, Francis Street, of which I’m forced to jostle with an endless progression of semi-trailers, dodge potholes and ingest a toxic cocktail of both diesel fumes and dust.
I grudgingly accept nothing is going to be done about the pollution, in the short term anyway, and the tide of trucks makes road upkeep seemingly impossible but not to have a designated bike lane is too much to accept.
The danger is real and if something is not done soon I’m certain someone is going to be seriously hurt if not killed.
