Our history unearthed by Footscray archaeologist

Australia’s ancient history will soon come alive for school students thanks to the work of a Footscray archaeologist.

Thea Kinsela is drawing on her experience as a teacher and writer to create a school history textbook using archaeology to debunk prevailing myths and teach children about the country’s rich pre-colonial history.

As the project officer of the Young Archaeologists’ Program at La Trobe University, Ms Kinsela wants to provide resources for teachers and present information in a way that helps break down myths and misconceptions, such as the view of indigenous culture as being largely nomadic.

In the meantime, she’s busy running her blog (askthearchaeologist.wordpress.com) and raising funds to help produce the book, Ancient Australia Unearthed, in time for the first term of school next year, via a Pozible crowdfunding campaign (pozible.com/ancientaustralia).
