VTCA: Williamstown CYMS saved by washout against Spotswood

Spotswood was cruelly denied the points against Williamstown CYMS in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association north division.

Rain halted play in the local derby as the Woodsmen were closing in on a resounding victory.

CYs were bowled out for 78, with Charith Fernando’s 54 avoiding what would have been an embarrassingly low total.

Fernando’s knock would be a significant one, as it forced the Woodsmen into having to build an innings in a bid for a result.

The Woodsmen made a bright start to be 1-63 after 20.5 overs with David Buysen leading the way with 38 not out. But then the rain washed away hopes of any result other than a draw.

In response to the weather coming to their rescue, CYs official Twitter account @WCYMSCC cheekily tweeted: ‘Washed out! Stiff but that’s cricket’.

In the other local stoush, Laverton rolled Altona North. Laverton posted 133 with opener Matthew O’Brien top-scoring with 38. North, dismissed for 112, had no answer to Kane Hallinan, who took 4-32 to go with his 30 runs.

Footscray United had a successful 80th reunion but couldn’t cap it with a first XI victory. The Bulldogs (71) were outclassed by Doutta Stars (7-144) in a one-sided game at Scovell Reserve.

In senior division, Yarraville Club is languishing on the bottom half of the ladder after it was pummelled by reigning premiers Greenvale in a rain-affected match at Greenvale Recreation Reserve on Saturday.

The Clubbers could manage only 9-55 with their innings reduced to 26 overs because of intermittent rain.

The Vales had no trouble picking off the runs, finishing with 3-121.

In north A1, Seddon (5-134) claimed a five wicket win over Haig Fawkner (9-131), but Altona Roosters (145) couldn’t contain Sunshine Druids (9-198).

In west B1, Newport-Digman (5-164) is in second spot in its first season in the competition after thrashing Sunshine YCW (85). Kingsville Baptists, Barkly Street Uniting and Footscray ANA all lost.
