Map out fun and fitness with orienteering

Put your skills with a map to good use this summer by trying your hand at parks and street orienteering.

The Tuckonie Orienteering Club is looking for new participants to join the 100 or so regulars meeting for a healthy evening outing on Tuesdays over summer around the parks and suburbs of Melbourne’s inner west.

The route generally takes about an hour, followed by light refreshments.

Entry is free for anyone hoping to give orienteering a try, but long-term orienteer Peter Taylor is sure anyone who gives it a try will be hooked.

The Yarraville father said he has been orienteering since he was 18 and his children have been involved since they were six months old and in prams.

“I think this is a great combination of fitness and using your mind at the same time,” he said.

“It’s good to be quick but you have to be able to navigate as well.”

All ages are welcome to turn up and join in with families especially encouraged.

Route maps define spots to visit along the way, with the general idea of ticking off all locations as quickly as possible.

The next event in the Western Sunset Orienteering Series will be at the Henry Turner Memorial Reserve in Footscray from 7pm on December 10.

Enter from the Farnsworth Avenue traffic lights and meet at the reserve car park
