Christmas hope served in hampers with care

A Newport church is giving away hampers on Sunday so people have a little more cash to buy Christmas presents for their loved ones.

C3 Church Pastor Nathan Hawes said Christmas was a tough time for those already doing it hard.

“We have a free lunch that happens every Thursday, so obviously we’ve promoted to them that we’re giving away hampers, and they’ve registered.

“This year we wanted to do something, and not just for the regular 30 or so people who come every Thursday but also for the wider community.

“They’re wanting to buy presents, but presents are an extra cost.

“They’re just trying to get by with their daily needs of food, but then they’re obviously expected to [buy] presents for their kids and their family members, so presents are an added expense.

“If we can help them out with a food parcel, then they can spend more money on their family for presents and things like that.”

Hampers will contain a bathroom package, long-life milk, canned food and other items. They will be given away after a 10am service at the church at 107 Woods Street, Newport.

People can register to receive a hamper by calling 9391 8643.
