Gallery: Australia Day in Altona

About 15,000 people attended the seventh Australia Day in Altona festival, with traders saying it’s the biggest crowd they’ve seen.

Thousands flocked to Pier Street throughout the day, before lining the foreshore and Altona pier to watch a fireworks display at 9pm.

Altona Village Traders Association president Kim Walsh said businesses and stallholders were ecstatic about the whole day.

“We feel it’s the biggest and the best we’ve ever had,” he said.

“We were a little bit worried about not coping with the crowd, but we had the most amazing response from Victoria Police. Considering the number of people there, it was almost trouble-free.”

Among the various activities on offer, for the first time, organisers offered free camel rides along the beach, which Mr Walsh said people would be telling their kids about in 40 years’ time.
