Newport Rams have claimed the prized scalp of premiership front-runner Geelong Baycats in Baseball Victoria’s summer league division 1.
The rising Rams showed how far they have come in their top-flight promotion season, defeating the inter-conference leader and the holders of the competition’s best record 8-4 on the road at the Geelong Baseball Centre on Saturday.
Strength in numbers was the key to the Rams’ shock road victory.
“Geelong are a pretty good side. It was just simply that we backed each other up,” Rams assistant coach Gavin Young told the Weekly.
“Everyone contributed and did something in the game that made a difference to us winning.”
Tyson Foreman led the way in a productive batters box for the Rams.
Foreman had three RBIs on three hits in a bonus from the seven spot.
“He’s there as a catcher and to do a good defensive job,” Young said. “But he’s a guy who on his day can hit with the best of them.”
Jeremy Young, Dean Malthouse and Travis Bass had two hits apiece. Scot Malthouse had a hit and a walk.
Matthew Lawman failed at bat but made up for it in a big way on the mound. Lawman worked relief for a tired Bass, who was feeling the pinch after three consecutive complete games, and delivered on the mound.
Their last home game of the season is against Cheltenham at KC White Reserve on Sunday.
