A team of doctors and nurses is being sent to Sudan to save lives following a fund-raising campaign by the Australia Light Foundation.
The Tottenham-based Muslim community organisation will be sending the medical team to the war-ravaged region next month to assist with healthcare.
ALF’s Sel Sanli says the organisation, which has operated in Maribyrnong for more than 40 years, wants to help people in the greatest need.
“We have decided to send aid and healthcare assistance to Sudan to provide medical help to villagers,” he said. “The villagers in Sudan have been living in tents and have eye and stomach diseases from dirty water.”
The Australia Light Foundation will sponsor five doctors and three nurses who will provide medicine and care for hundreds of people over a week at the end of March.
“As a community living in one of the world’s most liveable cities, we feel we are responsible for providing better living conditions for those living with some of the worst,” Mr Sanli said. “We all have to take our responsibility in providing that.”
Mr Sanli said the trip comes ahead of a planned $300,000 drinking water blueprint to improve the situation in the long term. Donations to the cause can be made directly to the Australian Light Foundation Community Services & Relief Fund bank account.
