Newport milliner has spring racing in her step

Newport hatmaker Rebecca Carswell will be exhibiting some of her creations at the MAArvelous Millinery cocktail party this month.

The Spring Racing-themed event, at the Melbourne Arts Centre on September 17, is hosted by the Millinery Association of Australia and will see milliners from across Australia unveil their spring collections.

Ms Carswell said she started making hats in her Newport home nine years ago after completing a TAFE course.

“I started making hats for myself to go to country races,” she said.

“I didn’t like the stock-standard ones that were all the same; I wanted something a little bit different. So, mum would make me a dress and I’d make a hat; either get a second-hand one or get bits and pieces from Spotlight and put it together myself.”

She described her hats as timeless modern classics that could be worn over and over.

The inaugural MAArvelous Milliner’s Design Competition will be held at the cocktail night, awarding one milliner for workmanship, design and aesthetics.
