Yarraville parking meters vandalised again

Vandals have again targeted Yarraville’s parking meters, marking the second major attack in less than a week.

Star Weekly understands at least five of the machines were smashed overnight Wednesday, rendering them inoperable.

The vandalism follows the filling with Liquid Nails construction adhesive of the coin and credit card slots of about a dozen of the machines last week on the eve of the machines coming into operation.

Maribyrnong Council has refused to reveal the cost of the repairs to the meters, installed last week at a cost of about $120,000.

Debate continues to rage on social media about the introduction of paid parking, which supporters say will improve parking turnover but opponents warn will force traders out of business.

Opponents have organised a memorial to “commiserate the death of the village” in front of the Sun Theatre from 2pm Saturday, September 12.
