PSOs use capsicum spray during Altona brawl

Protective Services Officers used capsicum spray to defend themselves during a brawl involving up to 15 people at Altona railway station on Sunday night.

Trains were cancelled after one of the brawling hit his head on a moving train, breaking the window.

Acting Sergeant Adam West said a group on the platform started causing trouble about 8pm prompting the PSOs to warn them about their behaviour.

“[The PSOs] had two men advance on them in a threatening manner,” he said.

“They’ve deployed OC spray.

“Then four men have become involved in a fight with the PSOs.

“One of the men’s rolled into the side of a train that was almost stopped at the station.

“One of the train’s windows was broken.”

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said when paramedics were called they were told up to 15 people were involved.

A man driving past the station said he saw people fleeing the scene.

“I full on had to slam the breaks when driving down Pier Street,” he said.

“Some dodgy people bolted in front of me, but they were looking back towards the station.

“I don’t know if they started it or were involved.”

A man in his 20s was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with head injuries.

Four men were arrested and are expected to interviewed in relation to affray and criminal damage offences.

Two Tarneit youths, aged 19 and 16, have been charged with affray.

An 18-year-old and 16-year-old have been released pending summons.
