Altona North’s Fatoum Souki was a volunteer lawyer at the Western Suburbs Legal Service before starting her own practice in Newport. Ms Souki promotes positive relations between Australian Federal Police and Muslim women and young people. She talks to Goya Dmytryshchak
Why did you get into law?
Because I wanted to contribute and serve the community. It’s been such a rewarding experience and I look forward to continuing to be part of such a great community.
What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay?
I was raised in Altona North and currently operate my own law practice in Newport. I love the fact that I can service the community that I grew up in, and it helps that I work within walking distance of my home. Our mosque is a place that connects me to the local community … I truly value the council’s continued support in ensuring all residents have a local connection.
What do you love about Hobsons Bay?
I love that we have the comfort of suburbia while being so close to the city. There are great local parks and the local markets always guarantee some great finds. I often enjoy weekend brunches and shopping in Williamstown.
What would you change about Hobsons Bay?
It would be nice to have a larger shopping centre with more options and maybe a cinema.
What’s your favourite cafe or eatery?
While there are so many great places to enjoy a meal, Cafe Cedar on Melbourne Road in Newport is a great local find.
What’s your fondest memory?
My fondest memory is growing up and enjoying afternoons in the park with the kids who gathered from the neighbourhood.
