Olly’s big run for asylum seekers

Williamstown’s Olly Tripodi is setting off on his second Run4Refugees to raise money for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.

In 2013, he raised about $1100 for the not-for-profit organisation that provides legal assistance, meals, groceries, job placement and other services for asylum seekers.

“It’s just something simple I think I can do to support very vulnerable people,” Mr Tripodi said.

“At every step of the way, asylum seekers are dehumanised and sometimes I think ordinary Australians feel like there isn’t a lot they can do, and this is something that I can do.

“The resource centre does extraordinary work. What appeals to me is that the money goes directly to refugees coming to Australia and refugees who are settling here. They’re offered legal support, assistance with day-to-day living, education opportunities and groceries.

“The ASRC is proof that there’s enormous goodwill for asylum seekers in Australia, despite their inhumane treatment by successive governments.

“Australians want to get behind asylum seekers and welcome them to our safe shores.”

The run is on October 18, part of the Melbourne Marathon, and Mr Tripodi will be tackling a 10-kilometre stretch.

On his fundraising page, he jokes that he is “chafing for a good cause”.

“It’ll be worth $10 just to watch me sweat my way through the first 400 metres.”
