After smashing 12 state records at the recent Victoria lifesaving junior pool championships, Williamstown’s Nippers are still on a high.
Junior activities director Craig Logan says the championship success of the Nippers, aged five to 13, was the best result in the history of Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club.
“They’re an outstanding bunch of athletes and they train really hard,” he said.
The Williamstown junior team had 26 athletes at the event, from under-8s to under-12s, and scored 344.5 points, well ahead of closest rival Black Rock on 223.
Mr Logan says Williamstown is expanding its Nippers program and currently had about 300 members.
“In addition to the Friday Nippers program, the club is starting up Sunday Nippers,” he said.
“When you have a look around, we’re in a unique position. For the whole of the western region, there’s really only us and Altona as lifesaving clubs.
“The more kids that I can get involved in this program, the more kids learn how to be smart and safe around water and how to look after themselves in the sun and remain active.
“So the more kids I can get enrolled in this program, learning these valuable life skills, the better for our club and the community at large.”
An information session will be held at the club, corner of Victoria Street and the Esplanade, from 4pm on Sunday.
