The Altona-based Italian Book Club has celebrated its 10th anniversary and a decade of growth far beyond reading.
Founded by Seaholme’s Mirella Giles, the club has expanded beyond reading and discussing poetry and books.
“Our motto is ‘Usa la mente o la perdi’ – use your mind or lose it,” she said.
“We tease and challenge the mind and bring in guest speakers who entertain while delivering useful information.”
She said the club had held computer classes in Italian since 2012 and turned a group of grandmothers from 60-80 years into computer and internet gurus.
Performers at the club’s anniversary event included book editor Edward Caruso, whose 2010 poetry book,
Di Alture ed altre Utopie, is based on his journey to Chile and Peru.
The club will reconvene at Altona North library at 10.30am on February 3 and newcomers are welcome.
