Altona sprouts an Eat My Street party

An Eat My Street planting party will be held in Bayview Street, Altona, this month.

Under the Eat My Street program, edible gardens are being planted Australia-wide.

Food4Good, which runs the program, wants to transform entire streets into edible community gardens.

Food4Good ambassador Marie Wilson, an Altona resident for more than 20 years, said that after two of her close friends were diagnosed with multiple scleroris she began to think about improving her health through homegrown food.

“The program provides an opportunity for communities to move towards a more sustainable and healthy lifestyle,” Ms Wilson said.

“There’s a growing need for neighbours to get to know each other and I see edible streets as a great conversation starter. The Eat My Street program helps neighbours get their edible gardens started and even provides a barbecue and live music at the Eat My Street planting party.”

Ms Wilson said it wasn’t necessary to have a green thumb to be part of the program.

“You don’t have to be a gardening expert because the no-dig gardens we plant are designed to be simple to build and maintain.”

The planting party will be held at the home of Aleisha Rasheed, president of Altona Community Gardens.

Ms Rasheed’s group has developed a financial and business plan to present to Hobsons Bay council in a bid to start a garden on public land.

Food4Good is seeking submissions for people wanting to transform their streets into edible gardens. For your own Eat My Street planting party, visit www.food4good.com.au
