A Seddon resident has been recognised during this month’s Climate Change conference in Paris with a United Nations award for his work to help Pacific island nations facing rising sea levels.
Nathan Quadros is education manager at CRC for Spatial Information, which picked up the Climate Solutions award for a project co-created with NGIS Australia.
The ‘Mapping Exposure to Sea Level Rises’ project is helping communities in Tonga, Samoa, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea to use online tools to prepare for and adapt to sea level rises brought about by climate change.
More than 200 people have been trained to use the tools so far.
More than 10,000 buildings in the region have been identified as at high risk of inundation within 80 years.
They include schools, hospitals and critical infrastructure.
